Profile

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) forms the heart of the KLM Group, which also includes KLM cityhopper, transavia.com and Martinair. KLM has three core businesses: passenger transportation (Passenger Business), cargo transportation (KLM Cargo), and aircraft maintenance (KLM Engineering & Maintenance).

KLM is the worlds oldest airline still operating under its original name. We offer customers global access at competitive prices with a state-of-the-art product. Owing to its merger with Air France, KLM is now part of the Europes leading airline group. AIR FRANCE KLMs strategy can be expressed as: one Group, two Airlines, and three Core Business. KLM owes its reputation mainly to the ingenuity, customer-driven care and reliability of its employees. Together, they embody the KLM motto: The Reliable Airline.

KLM has always had great ambitions. Even in the early days, the airline aimed to play a leading role in the global airline industry. KLMs small domestic market forced the airline look beyond the borders (of Europe). KLM was the first European airline granted landing rights in New York and a listing on the Wall Street Stock Exchange. We were also the first airline to link up with an American partner (Northwest Airlines), which is now operating under the name Delta Airlines

Network

KLMs drive to expand has made Amsterdam Airport Schiphol one of Europes most important transit hubs. Owing to our merger with Air France and cooperation within the SkyTeam alliance, KLM now offers its customers and even more comprehensive network. The dual-hub strategy through Schiphol and Paris Charles de Gaulle is a cornerstone of cooperation between Air France and KLM.

Network quality and load factor are crucial to KLM. We are continually improving our new partnerships and alliances with other airlines. By making intelligent use of available capacity, KLM ensures that its flights are well-filled. This may be partly attributed to the fact that KLM has the worlds largest fleet of combi aircraft, which are designed to carry both passengers and cargo in vary configurations.

Sustainable growth

KLM is fully aware that sustainable operations are a prerequisite for achieving its objectives. That is why our strategy aims to achieve profitable growth that contributes not only to our own business objectives, but also to the economic and social development of the Netherlands.

In short, KLM seeks to achieve profitable and sustainable growth. Both these objectives carry equal weight in the airlines strategy. KLM invests structurally in economical aircraft such as the Airbus A330 and Boeing 777. In addition, the airline has introduced silent approach procedures at airports and has special de-icing stations designed to dispose of waste fluid in a responsible manner. These are but a few examples. KLM is continually exploring and investing to reduce its impact on the environment. In this way, Air France KLM aims to play a leading role once more; this time in the field of corporate social responsibility. Our objective: to ensure sustainable success for customers, employees and broader society.

Flying Blue in short

It has never been easier to earn Miles for Award tickets, upgrades, hotel and car rental packages and many, many more great offers. Every time you fly with KLM, Air France, Kenya Airways, Air Europa, other members of SkyTeam, you earn Miles. Even when you keep your feet on the ground, you can earn Miles with our non-airline partners in the Flying Blue programme. Its that simple. You just take care of the spending part. Have a good flight!

SkyTeam

Both KLM and Air France are members of SkyTeam, one of the global airline alliances. With ten member airlines as of 2009, SkyTeam is the worlds second-largest alliance in terms of market share. As SkyTeam members, Air France and KLM play an important role in North America, Europe, and Asia. And together with Kenya Airways, they enjoy a strong position in Africa as well.

Aims

KLMs works to achieve profitable growth that contributes to its own corporate aims as well as to economic and social development.

Offering reliability and a healthy dose of Dutch pragmatism, KLM provides customers with innovative products and safe, efficient and service-oriented operations paying proactive attention to the environment and corporate social responsibility. Since four years, Air France KLM is the leading airline in the Dow Jones Sustainability indexes, and the only airline in the Global 100 list.

KLM works to create sustainable growth at Schiphol Airport, to gain access to every market that will increase the quality of its network, and to maintain a level playing field for all industry players. It also works to ensure a balance between the companys interests and those of the people living and working close to the airport.

Fiscal 2008-2009: the facts

In fiscal 2008-2009 the KLM Group transported 23.5 million passengers and more than 606.000 tons of Air France and KLM cargo. It performed maintenance and technical modifications on aircraft, engines and components for many different airlines. The KLM Group operates a modern fleet of 214 modern aircraft. During that year, the KLM Group employed almost 34.000 staff (excluding Martinair, including Martinair 36.000).
